Obituary of Colie Milford Hunter, Jr.

Colie Milford Hunter, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully at his home on April 30, 2024.

Son of Colie Hunter and Mildred Kirkley Hunter, Milford was born on March 12, 1934 in Columbia, SC. He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School and continued his education at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in consulting for many years and earned his Professional Engineering license. He continued his career in state government and retired in 1998 as Director of Physical Plant Services with the SC Department of Mental Health after 39 years of service.

He married Clara Starling Hunter on January 31, 1975, and he took loving care of her until her death on September 21, 2016.

Milford was beloved by his children who genuinely enjoyed spending time with him. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing pool, tennis, and ping pong and in later years, his interests included playing cards with friends, listening to audiobooks (especially those about World War II), and watching Gamecock sports.

Milford was a charter member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in West Columbia and later transferred his membership to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his infant grandson.

He is survived by his children, Cindy DiSarro (Jim), Patti Addison (Jimmy) and Alan Hunter, grandchildren, Cassey Gawith (Kris) and Eric Heineman, three great-grandchildren, and other loving family members and close personal friends.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and medical personnel who took such wonderful care of our father, including Belinda Watkins, Dr. Jeff Hook, and Danny Painter, and we extend our gratitude also to Stanley Harris, Venus Hughes, and Mike Turner of Traditions Health Hospice for the care and support they provided.

In his memory, donations may be made to the ASPCA.

A private gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

South Carolina Cremation Society is assisting the family. Family and friends may sign the online guest book by clicking on the "tribute wall" tab above.
