Obituary of Hugh Erven Jackson

Hugh Erven Jackson, aged 92, heard God's whisper, acknowledging his well-lived life and peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and his beloved animals.

Hugh entered the world on August 31, 1931, in Oxford, Mississippi, to John and Susie Jackson. Growing up in Mississippi, Hugh held dear the moments shared with his siblings, cherishing every chance to bond with family.

In 1951, Hugh answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the US Army's medical unit. Upon completing his service, he made his home in Chicago, IL where he embarked on a fulfilling career and celebrated the arrival of his son, Kevin.

Hugh embraced Christ as his Savior in his youth and reaffirmed his commitment as an adult, undergoing baptism again at the Historical Quinn Chapel AME Church in Chicago, where he joined his sister Ruthie, his brother J-Jr, and his niece Mattie Smith. Hugh became deeply involved at Quinn, serving various organizations, particularly enjoying his work with the men's ministry and assisting his nephew Earl Smith in aiding the elders. He remained an active member for over 35 years.

Upon meeting his life partner, Ivery, Hugh joyously welcomed daughters Lisa and Stacy into their loving union. Throughout their 70 years together, Hugh's devotion to Ivery remained steadfast. A devoted supporter of the Chicago Cubs and Bulls, he savored game days and cherished leisure moments spent with his wife in the yard or while traveling with family.

Alongside his brothers, Will Henry and J-Jr, affectionately known as the Three Musketeers, Hugh forged strong bonds, finding delight in shared activities like bowling, fishing, and hunting. Hugh was known for his resonant voice and comedic sense of humor. Known for his storytelling and ability to bring laughter, Hugh's kind heart endeared him to many. His love extended to his pets, whom he cared for deeply, providing them with unconditional love. Carmel, Chocolate, King, Prince, Blondie, and Golden were cherished members of his family.

Hugh dedicated 42 years of his life to his profession as a Bridge and Crane operator at Interlake Steel Company, which was later acquired by Acme Steel, before retiring.

In 1996, Hugh and Ivery embarked on a new chapter, moving to Columbia, SC, to follow their faith. They became active members of Bethel AME Church, finding joy in their church community.

Hugh was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Susie; brothers: Curry, Will Henry, J-Jr; sisters: Gert, Ora Lee, Ruthie and Dorothy and son, Kevin.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories his beloved wife, Ivery; daughters, Lisa (Steve); Mook-Stacy of Columbia, SC; daughter-in-law, Sandra; grandchildren, Nastasha and Kevin Jr; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Nehemiah all of Chicago, IL; brothers-in-law, Glen of Chicago, IL; Frank Morrow of Erie, PA; Doug Morrow, Howard Morrow (Mary) all of Orlando, FL; Johnny (Jo-Jo) of Columbia, SC; special nieces and nephews: Mattie Lee, Faye, Tony, Jeanette, Regina, Harry Lee, Reginald, Delores, Ann, Rochelle, Glen, Shandrell Louise, Marsha, Anthony Morrow, Latasha, and David; great-nieces and nephews, Stephanie, Stephan, and Melodenise. He also leaves behind special cousins, Lula B, Katherine, Evaleola, and Freddie Campbell.
